Communications services companies rose sharply after Comcast's earnings.

Comcast shares rose sharply after the cable giant's video and broadband subscriber losses were not as deep as feared, even as it added subscribers to a wireless-phone service it offers in conjunction with Verizon.

Shares of Nokia shares rallied after the Finnish telecom-services company posted earnings ahead of Wall Street expectations.
