City of Gainesville FL : Cold Weather Awareness & Safety

As the City of Gainesville and the State of Florida brace for the impact from a strong winter storm it is important that you prepare both your property and yourself. Gainesville and Alachua County will not see the brunt of this storm, but will be impacted with abnormal weather conditions including temperatures in the low to mid 30s with winds around 11-13 mph which will make temperatures feel closer to 20 degrees. Couple the low temperatures with a 100 percent chance of rain in the early morning hours on Wednesday, there is a possibility of freezing rain.

These conditions are hazardous to the health of humans, animals and plants. To help protect these groups as well as your homes we ask that you remember the following:

Protect People: Dress in layers and wear a hat and gloves. It is important to try and stay out of the wind and to stay dry. Also, remember to check on young children and the elderly who are most sensitive to cold weather.

Protect Pets: If cold weather is in the forecast, be sure to bring outdoor pets inside or give them a warm shelter to stay in.

Protect Plants: Cover cold-sensitive plants to protect them from the dangerous temperatures.

Protect Pipes: Cover exposed outdoor pipes and allow outdoor faucets to slowly drip to prevent from freezing and breaking.

Practice Fire Safety: Use safe heating sources indoors. Do not use fuel-burning devices such as grills; they release carbon monoxide, which is a deadly gas. Also, make sure to use space heaters according to their instructions and be attentive to open flames, such as candles.

Driving conditions on local roadways could be affected by freezing rain. Remember that bridges will freeze over first. Use caution when driving and make sure to give yourself extra travel time.
