OTTAWA--Canada's merchandise-trade surplus with the rest of the world narrowed in November as imports recovered and exports to countries other than the U.S. dropped.

The country posted a goods-trade surplus for the month of 1.57 billion Canadian dollars, the equivalent of about $1.17 billion, Statistics Canada said Tuesday. It was a fourth consecutive monthly surplus but narrower than the C$2 billion the market was expecting, according to economists at TD Securities.

October's surplus was revised upward to C$3.2 billion from a prior estimate of C$2.97 billion.

Exports fell for the first time since June, slipping 0.6% to C$65.74 billion in November, while imports recovered from a fall the month before with a rise of 1.9% to C$64.17 billion, the data agency said.
