SMI EXTENDS GAZE INTERACTION PLATFORM WITH UNITY INTEGRATION

Gaze interaction becomes easy to use in Unity, the leading game and VR software development platform

Today SensoMotoric Instruments (SMI) announced the release of its gaze interaction integration with the Unity software development platform. With a plug-in to the Unity platform, gaze interaction functionality becomes seamless for developers of mobile and desktop applications ranging from games to training simulations.

SMI’s eye trackers for desktop, virtual reality and mobile applications determine the users gaze point on a display, gaze hits on game objects and other key data, like 3D eye position and pupil dilation, in real time. Such data can be used for explicit actions like intuitive aiming, quick object selection, turn or jump in the viewing direction or implicitly to have an application react to the user’s visual attention like social interaction with avatars, or change in the course of action or appearances. In virtual reality applications using, for example, the Oculus Rift, the integration with Unity opens new possibilities of personalized display calibration and fully immersive interaction and analysis.

These and many other gaze interaction functions can make games, simulations, training software and many other applications more immersive, efficient and simply more fun to use.

SMI’s Unity integration enables the easy use of these exciting functions without the need of expert knowledge about eye tracking and allows developers to focus on enhancing their applications effectively.

“After a year of development and validation with students and professionals on many applications in Unity, we have fine tuned and proven this extremely powerful and yet easy to use toolset. Now we are making it available to the market,” says Christian Villwock, Head of SMI’s OEM business unit. “Our eye trackers in all integrations from desktop monitors to the Oculus Rift HMD can now easily be integrated in Unity projects.”
