PRESS RELEASE

25 January 2020

Today the Governor of the Bulgarian National Bank, Mr Dimitar Radev, met with the Managing Director and Chair of the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund, Ms Kristalina Georgieva. The topics of the discussion held at the BNB included the cooperation between the central bank with the international institution, the expectations for the economy and the banking sector in Bulgaria in 2020, and the current state and outlook for the European and global economy.

The BNB Governor emphasised the strategic importance of the ERM II and the Banking Union accession process. Mr Radev shared his expectations of an overall successful year for the economy and the banking sector, noting however that certain external risks and factors may potentially spill over to Bulgaria.

According to Ms Kristalina Georgieva, on a regional and global level there are signs of some stabilisation and consolidation of economic growth but there are uncertainty and structural issues that should be resolved through appropriate policies. In this context, Ms Georgieva commended the efforts for deepening the EU integration prospects for Bulgaria as a mechanism for bringing in new elements of financial and macroeconomic sustainability for our country.
