Bayer Puts Focus on Bringing Innovation to Livestock Producers

SAN DIEGO, Jan. 28, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- With continuing pressure on the livestock and agriculture industry to provide a healthy, abundant food supply, there is a strong need to develop innovations that achieve solutions for a rapidly growing human population - one expected to reach nine billion by 2050. At the National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) Cattle Industry Convention, Bayer announced its continued focus on breakthrough discoveries and its latest developments.

Leading the Way with a Portfolio of Treatment Options for BRD
Although there are several effective antibiotics and vaccines to help combat bovine respiratory disease, or BRD, it remains an ongoing battle and costs the industry more than $1 billion annually in the United States alone. Enter Zelnate(®) DNA Immunostimulant, a new innovation in animal health from Bayer that changes the way veterinarians and producers are able to approach BRD.

Based on its expertise and long-time commitment to treating BRD, Bayer formulated Zelnate with a unique composition that rapidly triggers the animal's innate immune system, preparing it to better fight infection when challenged by BRD. Zelnate is not an antibiotic nor is it a vaccine. Antibiotics are used for treatment by selectively targeting specific bacterial pathogens. Vaccines are used for preventing disease by triggering a specific immune response only to those pathogens included in the vaccine. DNA Immunostimulants are a new way to fight BRD by jumpstarting the innate immune system and enhancing the body's own ability to respond quickly and effectively.

Bayer also is launching Loncor(TM) 300 (florfenicol) Injectable Solution, the newest addition to the Bayer BRD treatment line. Loncor 300 can effectively treat and control BRD in high-risk cattle as well as treat foot rot in beef and non-lactating dairy cattle. Florfenicol is the active ingredient in Loncor 300, which can be administered either subcutaneously or intramuscularly.

The developments expand Bayer's extensive BRD treatment portfolio, which includes Baytril(®) 100 (enrofloxacin) Injectable. Since its introduction, more than 50 million cattle have been treated with Baytril 100 in the United States alone. Bayer continues to invest in Baytril 100 to maximize its value in the marketplace, bringing several label additions for beef, dairy and swine throughout its lifecycle.

Creating New Insecticide Products
But the focus on innovation at Bayer isn't limited to BRD as producers face additional challenges as well. In fact, insects can wreak havoc on the productivity of a cattle operation, transmitting disease and disrupting feeding (and ultimately animal weight gain). To help producers combat pest-related problems, Bayer has focused on delivering new pest management options to producers.

        insecticide form. Tolfenpro helps producers control horn flies and face
        flies in cattle and provides a new option to fight pests, including
        those that may have become pyrethroid- and organophosphate-resistant.
    --  Clean-Up(TM) II Pour-On Insecticide is the combination of an insecticide
        with an insect growth regulator (IGR) for topical application to control
        biting and sucking lice on dairy and beef cattle and calves. Clean-Up II
        can be used directly on the animal and requires only one application to
        kill adult lice, eggs (nits) and nymphs. It also has a zero-day
        pre-slaughter interval and milk discard time.
    --  DeltaGard(®), a new ultra low-volume cold fog insecticide, helps
        producers treat pests quickly and effectively. In addition to having the
        lowest amount of active applied compared to other insecticides, it also
        can be applied in and around livestock facilities with or without
        livestock present. DeltaGard provides a treatment option for quick knock
        down of stable flies and other pests listed on the label.
