London, Riga, 20 January 2015 Energy and commodity price reporting agency Argus has opened a new office in the Latvian capital of Riga, as the latest part of its global expansion plans.

Latvia is a major transit country for Russian, Kazakh and Belarusian commodities including oil products, coal and fertilizers. Riga is the largest industrial and commercial centre in the Baltic region and the new Argus office includes editorial, commercial and consulting staff.

Latvia acts as a strategic bridge between Europe, Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States. It has an important role in shaping European energy policy, which is a key priority under Latvia's presidency of the Council of the EU during the first half of this year.

Argus has 20 offices around the world in key energy and commodity producing and consuming centres. Argus will use the Riga office as a platform to further develop its coverage of Baltic markets in its English and Russian language publications.

Adrian Binks, the chairman and chief executive of Argus Media, said: "We are always keen to develop new products for the markets we cover and being closer to the community we serve will help us achieve this aim. The Baltics is a key region for energy and fertilizers, particularly as a route to western markets for Russian producers. It is very influential in supply dynamics and we are glad to be here."
