Save the date! On January 19th, 2018, the Lunch and Learn events held by the Alachua County Democratic Party are returning with a talk by Commissioner Harvey Ward on his proposal to delay the 2018 municipal races from March to November.

City Commissioners voted in October to put Ward's proposal on the ballot by a 6-1 measure. This proposal is designed to increase voter turnout for municipal elections. According to the Gainesville Sun, the last city election in March had a voter turnout of only 11.9%, while the November general election had a turnout of 73.6%. If passed, the proposal would change terms for city officials from the current three years to four, though no commissioner's current term would be extended, and align the election cycle with state and congressional elections.

At the Lunch and Learn event, Ward will talk directly with voters about his support for this initiative. Come to the Life South Community Room- Newberry Road on January 19th to learn more, and bring your lunch!
