ZWICKAU/INGOLSTADT (dpa-AFX) - According to a media report, the VW plant in Zwickau must fear for its future even after the compromise between Volkswagen and the works council. According to the magazine "Spiegel", the group is considering building the last remaining model, the electric Audi Q4 e-tron, at least partially at another location from the first half of the 2030s.

Production at Volkswagen's US plant in Chattanooga is reportedly under discussion. At least the vehicles for the US market could be produced there in the future, it was said. So far, these have come from Zwickau. "We are currently examining various scenarios," said an Audi spokeswoman when asked. At the same time, she emphasized: "Zwickau will remain a production site for the Audi Q4 e-tron and Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback in the future."

First Audi "Made in the USA"

The VW sister model ID.4 is already being produced in Chattanooga. By contrast, the Q4 would be the first Audi model to be manufactured directly in the United States. So far, Audi has primarily served the U.S. market from its plant in Mexico.

From 2027, the Audi Q4 e-tron and its station wagon variant, the Q4 e-tron Sportback, will be the only models still being built in Zwickau. The VW models ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and the Cupra Born, which have also been produced there so far, will then move to Wolfsburg and Emden. This was agreed by the company and the works council as part of the wage compromise just before Christmas.

In return, the employees have job security until 2030. The Zwickau plant has around 9,500 employees./fjo/DP/men
