DRESDEN (dpa-AFX) - A research campus could be built at the Transparent Factory in Dresden starting in 2026. Volkswagen is negotiating with the Technical University (TU) of Dresden about joint use of the factory premises in the Saxon state capital, as spokespersons for both sides confirmed. The Free State of Saxony is also involved in the negotiations. The "Handelsblatt" newspaper was the first to report on this. According to the report, the talks are scheduled to be concluded in the summer.

If an agreement is reached, the TU says an innovation campus for cutting-edge research will be created in close cooperation with strategic corporate partners. According to the report, half of the space could be available starting next year, with the rest of the site remaining in VW's hands.

Volkswagen is struggling with sales problems. As a result, the company plans to cut 35,000 jobs nationwide. Production of the ID.3 electric model is set to be phased out at the Transparent Factory at the end of the year, affecting around 320 employees. Founded in 2001 as a prestige project, the site is the automotive group's newest and smallest. In February, Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU) reiterated the contractual agreement on car production at the site. /jbl/DP/men
