COLOGNE/FRANKFURT (dpa-AFX) - According to its own figures, Germany's second-largest tour operator, Dertour, has recorded a strong start to the coming winter season. The number of guests rose by 11 percent compared with the previous year, the company announced. "The increase in guests we are currently seeing builds on an already very strong winter last year," said Mark Tantz, managing director for Germany, to the German Press Agency. "It's very clear that people want to travel."
According to the company, Egypt, Spain, Turkey, Tunisia, and the Canary Islands are particularly popular destinations. Thailand, the Indian Ocean, the Caribbean, the United Arab Emirates, and North America topped the list for long-haul destinations. Dertour is part of the Rewe Group and is the second-largest tour operator in the German market after Tui.
Wellness, winter getaways, and $1,250 per person
According to the report, Dertour recorded the strongest growth in Egypt (up 129 percent), the Emirates (up 76 percent) and Thailand (up 47 percent). Thailand is considered the company's most important long-haul destination; Dertour claims to offer the largest range of tours in the German market.
In addition to classic sun destinations, demand is also growing for wellness stays, nature experiences, and so-called winter getaways, i.e., sun instead of snow. The trend toward early booking continues. On average, a Dertour guest spends around 1,250 euros in the current tourism year. Short- and medium-haul relaxation holidays last around ten days on average. In order to meet the increased demand, Dertour has secured additional flight quotas for the 2025/26 season.
Tui is also banking on wanderlust
Competitor Tui is showing similar developments. Last week, the travel group also emphasized strong interest in long-haul trips in winter, especially to Asia. According to Tui, Thailand is one of the most popular destinations. Classic sun destinations such as Egypt, Spain, and Turkey also remained in demand across all target groups.
The German Travel Association (DRV) also reports stable travel demand. "Travel remains at the top of Germans' consumer wish lists this year," said a spokesperson. The trend toward early booking continues, with particularly high demand for package flights, cruises, and long-haul destinations. /kge/DP/zb
