Tesla's China sales fell in December as local automakers continued to squeeze its market share.

The U.S. electric-vehicle maker sold 93,766 China-made cars in December, 0.4% lower compared with a year earlier, but 18% higher than in November, data from the China Passenger Car Association showed Friday.

Robust auto demand continued in December in China, the world's largest EV market, thanks to the government's aggressive subsidies, the CPCA said.

BYD remained No. 1 in sales with a record 509,440 units delivered in December.

Tesla was fifth place in terms of car sales in China for December, after falling out of the top three spots in October.

The CPCA estimated that sales of EVs and hybrid passenger cars rose 35% from a year earlier to about 1.50 million units in December.

Chinese automakers have benefited significantly from the government's trade-in subsidies in the final quarter of 2024.
