HERZOGENAURACH (dpa-AFX) - Employee representatives have reacted angrily to the announcement by supplier Schaeffler that it intends to cut 2,800 jobs in Germany alone. The announced measures are not proportionate, according to a statement from Schaeffler's General Works Council.
The IG Metall trade union demanded that the company management explore other options. "I call on the company to enter into talks with the employees about alternatives to the job cuts," said district manager Horst Ott.
Schaeffler had justified the planned cutbacks with the fact that the industrial business, for example with bearings for wind turbines, had recently declined. In addition, the global economic situation is difficult and is delaying the transformation to e-mobility.
The recent merger with Vitesco also offers potential for savings. A total of 4,700 jobs are to be cut, of which around 1,000 are to be relocated within Europe or to non-European countries. Two foreign plants in Europe are to be closed completely./dm/DP/jha
