Sanofi has announced that the Japanese Ministry of Health has granted orphan drug designation to riliprubart for the treatment of people with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP).

The ministry grants this designation to drugs that treat rare diseases and for which there is an unmet medical need. To date, approximately 4,000 people have been diagnosed with CIDP in Japan.

Despite available treatments, many CIDP patients experience residual symptoms, such as weakness, numbness, and fatigue, which can lead to long-term morbidity and a reduced quality of life.

Two Phase 3 studies are underway to test riliprubart in people with PIDC as a potential best-in-class treatment. This decision in Japan follows similar designations in the United States and Europe.
