At the end of January, the Irish low-cost carrier forecast annual traffic close to this threshold, up 9% year-on-year. In March alone, it carried 15 million passengers, up 10% from last year.

Ryanair, Europe's leading airline in terms of passenger numbers had, however, reduced its forecast for the current year to 206 million passengers, compared with 210 million previously, due to Boeing delivery delays. Ryanair, which will have 612 single-aisle aircraft in its fleet by mid-March 2025, is an "all-Boeing" airline, apart from the 26 Airbus A320s operated by its subsidiary Lauda Air.

The airline carrying the most passengers in the Western world is American Airlines, with 226.4 million passengers in 2024. Meanwhile, Air France-KLM reached 98 million passengers in 2024.
