Following its partnership with the Bundesliga soccer team Borussia Dortmund, the armaments group Rheinmetall is now also sponsoring an ice hockey club.

The Group will become a "Premium Partner" of Düsseldorfer EG for the 2024/25 season, Rheinmetall announced on Tuesday. The cooperation will initially run for one year. In future, the Rheinmetall logo will be displayed on ice surfaces and boards at home games. Rheinmetall wants to become better known as an "attractive employer in the high-tech sector", said Group CEO Armin Papperger. "Rheinmetall is a company steeped in tradition and one of the largest and most important employers in the region," said DEG representative Harald Wirtz.

Rheinmetall announced the partnership with BVB at the end of May. Security and defense are cornerstones of democracy, BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke had explained at the time: "We should deal with this new normality." However, the contract with Rheinmetall was criticized by some BVB fans. Among other things, Rheinmetall equips the Bundeswehr and other NATO armies with weapons.
