Philips announces the first results of research aimed at decarbonizing the radiology department at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC), home to the best adult and pediatric hospitals in the southeastern U.S.

'The project, originally announced for May 2023, shows that sustainable initiatives can be both environmentally friendly and cost-effective', Philips points out.

The evaluation indicated, for example, that circular business models, such as upgrades, can reduce the total cost of ownership of an MRI system by up to 23% and carbon emissions by 17%.

The research also highlighted the importance of working with staff to improve the efficiency of patient examinations, and with industry partners to develop techniques to reduce carbon emissions between examinations.

According to Philips, improving scanning efficiency through AI could save energy and reduce unnecessary repetition of scans.
