Nissan has tested an innovative automotive paint aimed at lowering the ambient temperature of a vehicle's cabin in summer, and reducing the energy consumption of the air conditioning system.

Developed in partnership with Radi-Cool, a specialist in radiative cooling products, the paint incorporates metamaterials, synthetic composite materials whose structures exhibit properties not normally found in nature.

Parked side by side in the sun, a vehicle treated with Nissan's cool paint showed efficiencies of up to 12 degrees Celsius reduction in exterior surface temperatures and up to 5 degrees Celsius less inside, compared with a vehicle fitted with traditional automotive paint.
