Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Platforms, is forming a new team of artificial intelligence experts to pursue the ambitious goal of creating "artificial general intelligence" (AGI), Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday. This form of AI aims to match or even surpass human capabilities in multiple areas.
According to the agency, the project will be accompanied by an investment of over $10bn in Scale AI. The latter's founder, Alexandr Wang, is expected to join the AGI team once the deal is finalized.
Zuckerberg reportedly plans to recruit around 50 people for this new structure himself, including a new head of AI research. This initiative is said to be partly motivated by internal disappointment with the performance and mixed reception of Meta's latest language model, Llama 4.
Last month, the Wall Street Journal revealed that Meta had postponed the launch of its flagship model, dubbed "Behemoth," due to concerns about its capabilities.
Meta is not alone in the race for general artificial intelligence: its competitors, including OpenAI, are also seeking new funding to accelerate their developments in this field.
