STUTTGART (dpa-AFX) - Following the EU vote on additional tariffs on Chinese e-cars, Mercedes fears negative effects on the industry. "We are convinced that punitive tariffs worsen the competitiveness of an industry in the long term," said a spokeswoman. Free trade and fair competition secure prosperity, growth and innovative strength. The EU Commission's intention to impose punitive tariffs is considered a mistake that could have far-reaching negative consequences.

Instead, the Stuttgart-based car manufacturer advocates a negotiation solution with China. This would be in the interests of both sides. "We are convinced that there can be such a solution," it continued. However, it would take time to work it out. Therefore, the enforcement of the measures would have to be postponed.

In a vote in Brussels, there was not a sufficient majority of EU member states against additional EU tariffs on electric cars from China. This means that the EU Commission can decide - against Germany's wishes - to introduce levies of up to 35.3%. They are a reaction to Chinese subsidies. Whether this happens also depends on whether negotiations with China are successful./jwe/DP/ngu
