The number of E.coli cases reported in connection with an investigation of McDonald's Quarter Pounders has risen to 90 from 75 last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday
The CDC that of the 83 people for whom information was available 27 have been hospitalized. One death has was reported last week.
The Food and Drug Administration said it initiated inspections at a Taylor Farms processing center in Colorado and an onion grower in Washington state in response to the outbreak.
Last week, the FDA said preliminary information showed that slivered onions were a likely source of contamination and Taylor Farms recalled certain onions.
The FDA and CDC, discussing the investigation by the Agriculture Department's Food Safety and Inspection Service, said evidence doesn't point to ground beef as the likely source of contamination. The Colorado Department of Agriculture said on Sunday that all beef samples it tested were negative for E.coli.
