Intel will cut jobs at two of its locations in Oregon as part of a broader layoff plan at the chip maker.

The layoffs will affect 529 employees at Intel's facilities in Aloha and Hillsboro starting on July 15, the company said in a Worker Adjustment Retraining and Notification filing on Monday. Employees affected by the decision are or have been notified at least 60 days before the scheduled layoffs.

"As we announced earlier this year, we are taking steps to become a leaner, faster and more efficient company," an Intel spokesperson said Tuesday. "Removing organizational complexity and empowering our engineers will enable us to better serve the needs of our customers and strengthen our execution."

Intel's new chief executive, Lip-Bu Tan, said in April that employees should expect major layoffs in the next several months as the company embarks on a turnaround.

The chip maker has grappled with a years-long financial and technological rut as manufacturing issues have made its chips less competitive. Intel has also lagged in the artificial intelligence race, with its AI chips failing to gain much ground against market leader Nvidia.

Shares rose 7.9% to $23.72 in afternoon trading, and the stock is up 18% this year.
