ISLAMABAD (dpa-AFX) - Development Minister Svenja Schulze has agreed to set up a so-called helpdesk for local textile companies in the Pakistani capital Islamabad. The aim is to support local suppliers of German and European companies in Pakistan in meeting social and environmental standards, according to the Development Ministry. As a central point of contact, the helpdesk will offer local export companies advice, information and training on sustainable supply chains.
Pakistan is an important production country for textile companies. During a three-day trip, Schulze wants to find out how the German Supply Chain Act is being complied with in the manufacture of textiles. The SPD politician is also planning to visit factories that produce for the German and European markets.
"Companies have a duty to meet minimum standards for occupational health and safety and environmental protection, including in their suppliers along the supply chain," said Schulze. The German Supply Chain Act and the adopted EU Supply Chain Directive make this mandatory. "To this end, we will set up a helpdesk for companies in Pakistan, which is already proving its worth in many other countries with its range of advice and training."/nal/DP/jha
