FRANKFURT (dpa-AFX) - The DHL Group has expanded its air freight capacity at Germany's largest airport in Frankfurt. After a year of construction in Cargo City South, the new hub with a 24,500 square meter cargo terminal and an office building was officially opened. In future, up to 300,000 tons of freight can be handled here annually, according to DHL. That would represent ten percent of the total freight volume that airport operator Fraport is aiming for by 2040.
This mainly involves freight items that are grouped together on pallets, as a spokesperson explained. DHL handles its express business via Leipzig-Halle, Germany's second-largest cargo airport after Frankfurt.
The new Frankfurt offices will house the European headquarters of DHL's own service provider StarBroker. This company books and coordinates air freight capacities for DHL Global Forwarding./ceb/DP/stw
