On August 14, 2024, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesusdeclared a global public health emergency due to the rising mpox cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and other African nations. Since then, mpox has spread beyond Africa, with confirmed cases in Europe and Asia, raising global concern.
