BAE Systems (United Kingdom), Leonardo (Italy) and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co. Ltd. (Japan) have launched a joint venture called Edgewing to develop the future combat aircraft for the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP).

This entity will be responsible for the design and development of the aircraft and will remain the design authority until beyond 2070. It aims to enter service in 2035 and symbolizes a new stage in trilateral industrial cooperation between Europe and Asia.

Based in the United Kingdom, Edgewing will operate in each of the partner countries. Marco Zoff, former director of Leonardo Aircraft Division, becomes Edgewing's first CEO.
