ArcelorMittal has announced the start of construction of an electric arc furnace (EAF) for long products at its Gijón plant (Spain). The furnace is scheduled to be operational from the 1st quarter of 2026.

This 213 million euro investment is part of the company's decarbonization program in Europe, and represents a first step towards low-carbon steel production in Asturias.

Initially, steel production using the new equipment will reduce CO2 emissions by more than 35%, a reduction which ArcelorMittal estimates could reach 1 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year once the transition phase is complete.
