Anglo American appointed Ruben Fernandes as chief operating officer effective from July 1, as the company consolidates its production business.

The U.K. mining company added that Themba Mkhwanazi, regional director of Africa and Australia, will step down at the end of June.

The company said streamlining its leadership team comes as it makes rapid progress with portfolio simplification.

"We are on track to complete the strategic reshaping of Anglo American to focus on our world-class positions in copper, premium iron ore and crop nutrients," Chief Executive Duncan Wanblad said.
