WIESBADEN (dpa-AFX) - It's now official: holidays in certain countries in southern and eastern Europe are significantly cheaper than in Germany. A comparison of hotel and restaurant services also shows that the most expensive countries in Europe are in the north and in Germany's immediate vicinity.
If you're just looking at prices, you should go to Albania, North Macedonia, or Bulgaria, where prices are 52% and 51% lower than in Germany. But keep in mind that travel costs aren't included in the comparison.
Portugal (-35 percent) and Turkey (-31 percent), two classic vacation destinations, are also among the most affordable destinations. Spain is also a relatively inexpensive vacation destination, with prices 25 percent lower than in Germany.
Accommodation and eating out are particularly expensive in northern countries such as Iceland (+49 percent), Denmark (+28 percent), and Norway (+25 percent). With a surcharge of only 8 percent, Sweden is significantly cheaper. Switzerland is the undisputed most expensive destination, with an average surcharge of 52 percent on German prices.
