Shares of energy companies were flat as oil futures hovered near three-month highs.
Oil futures fell by 1.3% to settle at $73.32 a barrel after reported buildups in gasoline and other refined products offset the seventh-straight weekly drawdown in oil stockpiles tracked by the Energy Information Administration.
Natural gas futures rose 5.9% to $3.65 per million British thermal units as more blasts of winter weather threatened parts of the U.S. Analysts said ample domestic supplies of the heating fuel are likely to cap price spikes for natural gas this winter, however.
