OTTAWA-Canada said Tuesday that the recently unveiled 25% surtax on certain steel and aluminum products originating in China would take effect on Oct. 22, although it is prepared to provide tariff relief in some circumstances.

The announcement comes on the day that a 100% surtax on all Chinese-made electric vehicles imported into Canada kicked in, a move that matches policy enacted by the Biden administration.

"This is a very significant shift in Canadian policy, and it's a measure that our government is glad to be putting into place," Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland said at a press conference in Ottawa.

Canada's finance ministry said it heard some concern from certain businesses and industry associations about supply-chain implications from the 25% surtax on Chinese-made steel and aluminum goods. As a result, Canada said it intends to consider requests for tariff relief in cases where similar products from other countries are in short supply.
