On Wednesday, it had risen by 1.1 percent to 20,232.14 points. Investors on Wall Street also bought shares. Strong figures from software company Salesforce and comments from US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell on the future course of interest rates drove the three major US indices to record highs in the middle of the week.
Investors are likely to focus on France on Thursday. The government of Prime Minister Michel Barnier has been toppled by a vote of no confidence. MPs from the right-wing nationalist party Rassemblement National (RN) led by Marine Le Pen backed a corresponding motion from the left in parliament on Wednesday evening, as announced. This was triggered by a dispute over budget savings in times of tight budgets.
Bitcoin should also provide a topic of discussion. The cyber currency broke the 100,000 dollar mark for the first time in its history during the night. Since Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election, investors have been dreaming of a crypto-friendly US government and more lax regulations.
On the economic side, the calendar includes October data on German industry. Experts polled by Reuters expect incoming orders to fall by two percent after a rise of just over four percent in September. Market participants are hoping that the weekly data on initial claims for US unemployment benefits will provide further indications of developments on the US job market ahead of the official government report on Friday.
Investors are also eagerly awaiting the virtual meeting of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and Partners (Opec+). The oil producers could agree to extend the existing oil production cuts in order to support oil prices. According to insiders, an extension of at least three months from January is on the cards, with an extension for the entire first half of the year also an option.
