OTTAWA--Former Canadian finance minister Chrystia Freeland said on social media Friday she was joining the race to become Liberal Party leader and the next prime minister.
"I'm running to fight for Canada," she said on X, adding there would be an official launch on Sunday.
Freeland abruptly quit as finance minister about a month ago, citing policy differences with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. That triggered a political crisis for Trudeau, and increased calls from Liberal Party members for him to step down.
Trudeau said Jan. 6 he would step down as prime minister but remain in the job until Liberal Party members picked a new leader in early March.
On Thursday, former Canadian and U.K. central banker Mark Carney said he would also be seeking the Liberal Party leadership.
