Societe Generale named Jean-Yves Fillion as the chief executive officer of its Americas division, replacing Stephane About, who has decided to retire, the company said.

The French bank on Monday said that Fillion will join the group's management committee and be based in New York. It also said Fillion's appointment will take effect on Feb. 2, and is subject to the approval of regulatory authorities.

Fillion has had a 40-year career at BNP Paribas, where he was most recently vice chairman of the board of directors of BNP Paribas USA, Societe Generale said. He was also previously the CEO of BNP Paribas USA, chairman of CIB Americas, and CEO of CIB Americas, the bank said.

"Jean-Yves's appointment marks a significant step in our journey to strengthen our presence in the Americas," the company said. "His experience in the U.S. market and proven leadership will help us accelerate the momentum we've built, notably in corporate and investment banking."
