Netflix has acquired InterPositive, an artificial-intelligence filmmaking technology company founded by Ben Affleck.
InterPositive's entire team will join Netflix as part of the acquisition, with Affleck staying on as a senior adviser, Netflix said Thursday. Financial terms weren't disclosed.
"The InterPositive team is joining Netflix because of our shared belief that innovation should empower storytellers, not replace them," Netflix Chief Product and Technology Officer Elizabeth Stone said. "InterPositive's impressive technology is purpose-built for filmmakers and showrunners to work with tools that naturally support their creative visions and how they want to bring them to life."
InterPositive is building AI tools designed to preserve human creative control over the filmmaking process, Affleck said, adding that the tool has restraints built in to protect creative intent.
He said he trained the first model on a proprietary dataset generated on a controlled soundstage, with the goal of capturing the workflow of a film production.
"The results of this foundational work were deliberately smaller datasets and models focused on filmmaking techniques - rather than performances - creating tools that artists can use, control and benefit from," Affleck said.
He said Netflix's track record of responsible scaling of technology in art made the acquisition a natural fit.
"Our values, combined with our complementary strengths, will ensure these tools are used with the same care and responsibility with which they were built," Affleck said.
