(Alliance News) - Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti has stated that the government will evaluate available options for the disposal of its 4.9% stake in Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, as part of the ongoing consolidation process within the Italian banking sector.

As reported by Il Corriere della Sera on Thursday, commenting on the banking 'risiko' involving MPS, Mediobanca, and Generali, Giorgetti reiterated that the State must exit the Sienese bank's capital and that the assessment will take into account offers emerging on the market.

According to Barclays analysts, UniCredit could consider a counter-proposal for MPS, although the scenario appears politically complex and contingent on the outcome of the ongoing operation regarding Commerzbank.

Meanwhile, Deutsche Bank considers an alternative bid from Banco BPM possible, albeit remote.

In the meantime, Il Corriere adds, S&P has described a new phase of consolidation in the Italian banking sector as 'inevitable', arguing that current transactions could usher in a new season of mergers and acquisitions among credit institutions.
