(Alliance News) - MFE-MediaForEurope NV announced on Wednesday that Reti Televisive Italiane and Medusa Film have filed a lawsuit in the Civil Court of Rome against Perplexity AI Inc., a U.S.-based company specializing in generative artificial intelligence. This marks the first legal action in Italy concerning alleged copyright violations in the field of AI.
According to the two Mediaset Group companies, Perplexity allegedly used numerous audiovisual and cinematic works owned by them, on a large scale and without authorization, to train its artificial intelligence systems. This, they argue, constitutes an infringement of copyright and related rights.
Through the lawsuit, RTI and Medusa are seeking recognition of the unlawfulness of Perplexity's actions, an injunction to prevent any further unauthorized use of their content, and damages. They are also requesting the imposition of a daily penalty should future violations occur.
MFE-MediaForEurope Class A shares are down 0.1% at EUR2.99 per share, while Class B shares are up 0.3% at EUR3.974.
