FRANKFURT (dpa-AFX) - In light of the current political situation, Lufthansa will not resume flights to Iran until the end of January. "Due to the latest developments, Lufthansa decided on Monday afternoon to suspend its flights to Tehran until and including Wednesday, January 28," a company spokesperson stated.

Lufthansa is in close coordination with security authorities on this matter and is continuously monitoring developments throughout the region. The spokesperson added, "The safety of passengers and crew is always Lufthansa's top priority."

Flights were originally scheduled to resume this Friday after a break of around seven months.

Mass protests in Iran continue to put pressure on the country's leadership two weeks after the start of nationwide demonstrations. The authoritarian government is responding with the utmost severity. At the same time, there are increasing signs of diplomatic initiatives. Since Thursday evening, internet access has been cut off. According to his own statements, US President Donald Trump is considering supporting the demonstrators with satellite internet.

According to activists, the protests have spread to 186 cities. The US-based human rights network HRANA reported that 483 demonstrators have been killed. In total, 544 people have died so far, including children and 47 security forces. Around 10,700 people have been detained, the organization said. The group's figures could not be independently verified./jto/DP/men
