OTTAWA--Unemployment in Canada again edged higher in May, hitting its highest level since the peak of the pandemic as hiring remained lackluster.

Statistics Canada reported Friday that Canada's economy added a net 8,800 jobs last month. That was stronger than the 12,500 fall in employment economists expected, and comes after 7,400 jobs were added the month before.

The unemployment rate rose for a third month running to 7.0%. That was in line with expectations and comes after it ticked up to 6.9% in April.

When calculated using U.S. Labor Department methodology, Canada's unemployment rate in May was steady at 5.8%.
