On March 25, 2026, Hidroelectrica completed the procurement process for the supply of seven 216 MVA, 15.75/242 kV transformers, equipment necessary both for safe operation and for continuing the modernization process of one of Romania's most important electricity generation facilities, the Porțile de Fier I Hydroelectric Power Plant.
The open tender procedure, with an estimated value of RON 118,328,517.54 (excluding VAT), was launched on September 23, 2025, and conducted through the Electronic Public Procurement System (SEAP). Following the evaluation of bids, the contract was awarded to Siemens Energy SRL, which achieved the highest score and submitted a financial offer of RON 117,138,785.96 (excluding VAT).
This procurement forms part of Hidroelectrica's broader investment program aimed at modernizing equipment and maintaining the technical performance of the Porțile de Fier I Hydropower Plant, the most significant asset in the company's generation portfolio.
"Modernizing and strengthening energy infrastructure is a strategic priority for Hidroelectrica. The acquisition of these high-capacity transformers for Porțile de Fier I reflects our ongoing commitment to ensuring the reliability of our facilities, improving operational efficiency, and upholding the highest safety standards in operating assets that are critical to the National Power System (NPS).We will continue to invest in modern technologies and projects that directly support Romania's energy security," said Bogdan Badea, CEO of Hidroelectrica.
The Porțile de Fier I Hydropower Plant is one of Hidroelectrica's key generation facilities, contributing significantly to the company's overall electricity output. Located on the Danube River, the plant has an installed capacity of approximately 1,166 MW on the Romanian side, making it the largest hydropower plant operated by the company. Under normal hydrological conditions, the facility generates an average of 4 to 5 TWh of electricity annually, representing a substantial share of Hidroelectrica's total production. Given its scale and strategic importance, maintaining and upgrading the plant's technical performance remains a central priority within the company's investment plans.
Hidroelectrica is the largest producer of electricity from renewable sources in Romania and remains one of the most significant players in the energy sector in South-East Europe. With a portfolio of more than 6.3 GW of installed capacity in hydropower plants, combined with the Crucea wind farm, the company contributes to national energy security and to the achievement of the European Union's decarbonization targets.
