Shares of CSG Systems International rose sharply in premarket trading Wednesday after the software company agreed to be acquired by Japanese information-technology company NEC for about $2.3 billion.

NEC said it will pay $80.70 a share in cash for CSG, a roughly 17% premium to Tuesday's closing price of $68.75 for the Englewood, Colo., company.

The deal, which has an enterprise value of around $2.9 billion including debt, is slated to close next year.

CSG shares were recently up 14% to $78.30 in premarket trading.
