Consumer companies rallied as strong earnings from Amazon.com offset warnings from consumer-staple firms.

Newell Brands plunged after the maker of Sharpies and other consumer staples warned that price hikes drew resistance from consumers in the third quarter, pushing sales lower and causing the company to cut its full-year outlook.

Toiletry giant Colgate-Palmolive said inflation, trade uncertainty and consumer wariness continued to weigh on sales and profit across the consumer-goods sector.
