The communication services sector posted small losses as gains in T-Mobile and Charter Communications helped offset losses by Live Nation, Meta Platforms and Paramount Skydance.

The battle to acquire fabled Hollywood studio Warner Bros. has cast another cloud over an industry still recovering from the dual shocks of the pandemic and the writers and actors union strikes three years later. This year's domestic box office of $8.3 billion as of Dec. 25 is a bit below last year's and well below prepandemic levels of around $11 billion.

The Trump administration has launched investigations into the use of diversity initiatives in hiring and promotion at major U.S. companies, built on the novel use of a federal law meant to punish businesses that cheat the government. Alphabet's Google and Verizon Communications are among a list of companies that have received Justice Department demands for documents and information about their workplace programs, according to people familiar with the investigations.
