OTTAWA--Canadian manufacturing activity pulled back in October, with a drop in sales of chemicals, wood products and transportation equipment.

Factory shipments declined 1.0% from the month before to a seasonally adjusted 71.51 billion Canadian dollars, the equivalent of about $51.91 billion, Statistics Canada said Monday.

The drop was slightly softer than the data agency's advance estimate for monthly retreat of 1.1%, following September's 3.3% sales growth to the highest level in seven months.

Compared with a year earlier, manufacturing sales in October were up 0.7%.

Sales in volume terms were down 1.5% for the month, matching the decline in the industrial product price index in October.
