DORTMUND (dpa-AFX) - BVB coach Niko Kovac has backed Hans-Joachim Watzke after his cautionary election as president of Borussia Dortmund. "I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Aki. He is the right man in the right place," said Kovac. "I am convinced that he will lead this great club as he has done before in other roles."

Watzke resigned from his previous position as managing director of the BVB corporation on Sunday and was elected president at the club's general meeting. Although he was the only candidate, he received only 59 percent of the votes. "These were not the results we had hoped for," admitted Watzke's former managing director colleague Carsten Cramer at the annual general meeting of BVB-KGaA.

"We take this as an incentive to present a better image," Cramer promised. The active fan scene in particular had repeatedly criticized Watzke sharply in recent months. /lap/DP/stw
