DORTMUND (dpa-AFX) - Borussia Dortmund coach Niko Kovac has made it clear just how exceptional Bayern Munich's position is this season. "It's obvious to everyone that we can't challenge Bayern," said the coach of the current Bundesliga runners-up.
Kovac added: "And Bayern aren't just top of the Bundesliga, they're also right up there in the Champions League. That means this team, this squad, has a level of quality that you just don't see elsewhere in the Bundesliga at the moment."
The German record champions hold an impressive eleven-point lead over their nearest rivals ahead of the final matchday of the first half of the season. On top of that, the still-unbeaten side coached by Kovac's counterpart Vincent Kompany boasts a goal difference of 63:12. BVB, by comparison, stands at 29:15.
BVB's Goal Is Different
"We know where we come from. We know where Bayern are," emphasized Kovac — who once coached the Munich side himself — at a press conference in Dortmund. "We know, at the end of the day, where Bayern do their shopping and where we do ours. That's just how it is. We all have to accept that."
Kovac reaffirmed that Dortmund's goal is to break into the top four as quickly as possible, ahead of Tuesday's home game (8:30 p.m./Sky) against SV Werder Bremen. That would mean qualifying for the Champions League once again./jmx/DP/men
