BP is seeking at least $3.7bn in damages from Venture Global after winning an arbitration proceeding linked to undelivered liquefied natural gas cargoes. According to the US company's annual report, the claim could exceed $6bn, plus interest, procedural costs and legal fees.

In October, the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce found that Venture Global had failed to meet its contractual obligations to BP over its Calcasieu Pass plant, by not timely declaring the start of commercial operations and by not acting as a "reasonable and prudent operator". A final decision on the amount of damages is expected in 2027.

The dispute is part of a broader conflict between Venture Global and several energy groups, including Shell, Unipec, Edison, Galp, Repsol and Orlen. The US company, the second-largest LNG exporter in the United States, has nevertheless won two of the three arbitrations brought against it. A company spokesperson described BP's claims as "frivolous and unsupported by the evidence or applicable law".
