WOLFSBURG/DORTMUND (dpa-AFX) - Alexandra Popp has left her future at VfL Wolfsburg open, with the former German national team captain contemplating a move to Borussia Dortmund. "That remains in the back of my mind, and I'm not hiding it," the 34-year-old striker said in an interview with "Kicker." "Whether this year would be the right time is hard to say."

Popp's contract in Wolfsburg expires at the end of the season. The 145-time international and 2016 Olympic champion has long been linked with the BVB women's team, who are currently second in the Regionalliga West and known for their Bundesliga ambitions. Popp was also born in Witten in the Ruhr region and previously played for MSV Duisburg before joining VfL in 2012.

"It's possible that I stay in Wolfsburg"

Popp said she does not want to make a hasty decision "at this stage of my career." "There are question marks in every direction. It's possible that I stay in Wolfsburg. But it's also possible that I play elsewhere after this season, or even stop playing altogether."

In the Bundesliga, Popp currently leads the scoring charts alongside Hoffenheim's Selina Cerci (both with ten goals). "Physically, I feel very good," emphasized the three-time "Footballer of the Year" in Germany.

"I can play with more freedom"

The fact that, after her retirement from the national team in 2024, she can recover more has been "extremely good" for her. And: "I no longer have to carry a great deal of responsibility that I bore for many years. That obviously has an effect on me. I can play with more freedom."/ujo/DP/mis
