BioMérieux to build new production facility in Isère
bioMérieux has announced a strategic investment of over 250 million euros to establish a production unit for its BioFire range of PCR tests in La Balme-les-Grottes, Isère. The project is expected to create approximately 400 jobs, with the facility scheduled to become operational by 2030.
According to the in vitro diagnostics specialist, this new production unit addresses the need to secure supplies of essential diagnostic tests for the European market, while contributing to the resilience of healthcare systems in the face of infectious diseases.
BioFire syndromic PCR tests can identify the primary causes of respiratory, bloodstream, gastrointestinal, or meningeal infections from a single sample in 15 to 60 minutes, playing a key role in improving the speed and relevance of patient care.
'Syndromic tests represent nearly 40% of our revenue. With this new production unit, we will support long-term growth and strengthen supply chain resilience,' explained CEO Pierre Boulud.
Production at the La Balme plant will primarily target the European market, complementing existing capacity at the Salt Lake City site in the United States. This new production unit will allow bioMérieux to sustainably strengthen its industrial footprint in France.
bioMérieux designs, develops, produces, and sells systems used in clinical practice to diagnose infectious diseases (including HIV, tuberculosis, and respiratory infections), cancers, and cardiovascular pathologies based on a biological sample (blood, saliva, urine, etc.). Net sales break down by sector of application as follows:
- medical applications (84.3%): in industry, microbiological testing of samples from finished products, materials during the manufacturing process, or the environment, primarily in the food-processing, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics sectors;
