(Alliance News) - A return to profitability, the full restoration of dividends, and over EUR1.2 billion allocated to the State: the report by Bank of Italy Governor Fabio Panetta marks a turning point for the institution's finances, emerging strengthened from an extraordinary period.
As reported by Il Messaggero on Wednesday, following a loss of EUR7.3 billion in 2024, the 2025 fiscal year closed with a gross result of approximately EUR3 billion and a net profit of EUR1.7 billion, more than doubling previous figures. This improvement reflects the normalization of monetary policy, with a recovery in net interest income after years of compression.
While reiterating that price stability remains the primary objective, Panetta emphasized that the return to profit bolsters the capacity to withstand future shocks. Consequently, the distribution policy has returned to normal: a dividend of EUR340 million has been proposed, following two years in which payouts were supported by reserves.
The contribution to the State is significant, totaling EUR1.27 billion, roughly double the previous year's amount. Over the last decade, total transfers have reached EUR41.3 billion. On the balance sheet front, the risk fund has risen to EUR24.7 billion, while unrealized gains on gold holdings of EUR91 billion further reinforce the bank's capital solidity.
Panetta also outlined the reorganization of the Governing Board, with a renewed team tasked with steering the institution through monetary policy challenges and technological innovation. The overall picture indicates a phase of consolidation following the emergency period, with a strategic focus on digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and the digital euro.
Finally, there were shifts in the capital structure: Generali and Unipol increased their stakes, while MPS and Enpaia reduced theirs.
